Malawi has a long history of tobacco production, traceable back to the early 1920s. Production climbed to nearly 160 000 tonnes in 2000, which made Malawi one of the ten largest tobacco producers in the world.
Burley tobacco leaf amounted to 142 000 tonnes in 2000, about 89 percent of total production.
